***NO MEETING AT THE COURTYARD ON Sept. 5TH!
Presiding: President Mary Richardson
Invocation: Rich Pascal
Fellowship: Ray Baribeault
Birthdays: None
Anniversaries: John Bulduc – 8/29 17 Years
Guests: Gary Young and Bill Champagne brought Shelia Hayes
Ray read some examples of “Lexophilia.” Again! Being a “Lexophile” is a lover of words, especially in word games, puzzles, anagrams, etc. Some of the fun ones Ray shared were the following:
-What do you call an Alligator in a vest? An “Investigator!”
-A man had a fear of speed bumps…However he’s getting over it!
OK, you get the idea!
Announcements:
*Mary Richardson reminded that there will be NO MEETING AT THE COURTYARD NEXT WEEK as the Norwich Rotary Golf Tournament will be taking place.
*If you know of anyone who would be a good speaker at one of our Rotary Meetings contact Bob Farwell or Kevin Wickless. Speakers can be done virtual as well if needed.
*Gary Young announced that the Golf Committee is moving ahead with the golf tournament in September and will be contacting members who have participated in the past for their continued support. Sports and lottery tickets are featured and will be posted on the website for all to consider. Bidding can also take place the morning of the tournament. Volunteers are still needed for that day! Contact Gary Young or Barry Shead if you can lend a hand.
*The Sunshine Committee has a card for Laura Hobart if you care to sign.
*80,000 facemasks are available for your businesses through Rotary International. Let President Mary know before September 1st if you wish to have any for your business.
*Shelia Hayes said the Rotary Community Corps will be providing meals on the second Sunday in September at 1pm at Park Church in Norwich.
Happy Dollars: Andy Grant:
Andy said he was enjoying the series “Yellowstone” on TV almost as much as he enjoyed “Dallas” from years back. He also congratulated Gary Young on beating his 2 out of 3 in their tennis match from the previous day!
Barry Shead said he gained a bunch of weight from the pie he bought at last week’s Rotary Auction. It weighed a ton!
Rodney Green had a pie shout out! He supplies the Campbell Farm Stand with pies and they are having their biggest year ever with pie sales. They are averaging 120 pies a week! Also, the Chestnut Street Playhouse will be holding their Golf Tournament on October 7th and they really need support this year as the front facade of the theatre is rotting badly from the fountains that used to be there. It will be an expensive fix as the damage is quite extensive.
Ray Baribeault announced that his dad recently shot a 77 on the golf course! That’s his age!
Gary Young had praise for Ray’s dad for a great round of golf. Gary hoped he too would shoot his age on the links. He followed up with he might have to wait until he’s 103! He also stated that he might have beaten Andy Grant in their tennis match due to the fact that Andy had just given blood a few hours before the match!
Jennifer Granger was happy her parents were doing well!
Keith Caplet started off by sign language as he was at the meeting via Zoom, but finally unmuted himself to say he was just happy!
Jim Daly was happy Ray’s dad had a great round at the golf course.
Auction: No Auction
Lottery: Bill Champagne
Kathleen Tracey, Gary Young & Barry Shead drew cards to no avail! The Ace of Spades is still safe for another week!
Program:
Bill Champagne presented a program on the recently formed “Norwich Race Equity Committee.” He said the committee was formed as a result of a meeting of the Norwich Historical Society and Freedom Trail meeting where Lottie Scott was the guest speaker. They ended up forming the committee to promote a conversation on race. It started out with a few private dinners with between 16 and 32 people consisting of half black and half white participants. They decided to go public and had 2 events at the Otis Library that drew about 60 people prior to the Covid pandemic. They are hoping to organize a few more meeting virtually in the future until in person gatherings can take place.
Jim Daly led the club with the 4-Way Test.
President Mary adjourned the meeting at 1:10pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Bob Reed – RONE Reporter
