Norwich Rotary Club

It is the RONE for October 6 2021

President Andy called the meeting to order at 12:15 p.m.

Invocation-Gary Young provided one of his inimitable invocations!

Fellowship with Nancy Gentes! Nancy unearthed a number of historical nuggets to share with the club, including the 1st World Series Baseball Game 1: Cincinnati Red Stockings (AA) beat Chicago White Stockings (NL), 4-0 at Bank Street Grounds, Cincinnati!

Announcements: President Andy noted that over the last 3 months there have been only two reported cases of polio worldwide. The coat project is underway as is the No Show Gala. Gary Young, Chris Heller, and Bob Reed all made generous contributions. El Presidente also noted that the Liberty Bank challenge is in effect from October 12 to November 17. In other developments,  Jen Granger’s mother broke her hip, and Mike Gordon underwent triple bypass surgery. We wish them speedy recoveries. Chelsea Groton Bank will provide a new representative to replace Keith Caplet, while Kara Spinado of Dime bank will visit the club on October 20. Gary Young and Bill Champagne are hoping to enlist Peter Nystrom.

Happy Dollars: With Nancy Gentes! Nancy waxed effusively over the performance of the Red Sox. Barry’s daughter arrived early in the morning on a flight from Los Angeles. Subsequently, they hiked to the scene of the great train wreck of 1893. The Great East Thompson Train Wreck was a large rail disaster that occurred in East Thompson, Connecticut, on December 4, 1891. It was one of the most extensive train wrecks in American history, and the first of two to involve four trains. It happened on the New York and New England Railroad, which provided a shortcut from New York City to Boston by making a diagonal across Connecticut. From there they proceeded to the marker designating the convergence of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Erin was enthused by the food and related her participation in the recent Terri Brodeur walk against breast cancer. Gary noted the RCC meeting on Thursday and his forthcoming partial cornea transplant. As part of downsizing, he offered attendees a wide selection of lavishly illustrated 2022 calendars. Mary reported that Joel was out of the hospital and had a chair lift installed in his home. Jeff B. is taking a vacation, which includes sailing at Mystic Seaport and a visit to Lake George. Susy reminisced about skating with Charles Schulz’s daughter and critiqued her visit to Abbotts. ECAR is also sponsoring a blood drive. Andy Grant is smitten with pickleball. Andy Nollman offered kudos to the Red Sox and Pats for their recent performances. His folks are going to Florida and he is quite satisfied with his performance in fantasy football.

The Lottery with Terry Congdon! Mary-NO! Terry-NAY, Gary-NEVER. Quite a nice alliteration there, but alas nary a winner! The ZOOM lottery was won by Bonnie Johnson and Nancy. That’s what my notes say anyway. Gary reminded everyone that the golf tournament is on September 7, 2022. Someone mentioned selling potted roses as a fundraising idea. Fine, as long as “potted” is not a euphemism for intoxicated.

The Four-Way Test was recited by some and lip-synched by a few.
