Alfred Bliven served as the 19th President of the Norwich Rotary Club, serving from 1938-39.
He was born in February 21st, 1889 in Norwich, the son of Samuel and Emma Bliven. Samuel Bliven founded the Norwich Paper Box Company in 1885.
He and his wife Vera had three daughters: Virginia, Ruth, and Mary Ann.
He played oboe in the Norwich Philharmonic society, and the Blivens were asked to perform together at a wedding. He was a member of the Young Men’s Christian Association in Norwich, and in 1914 he played in a benefit baseball game for the YMCA auxiliary. He was a member of the Somerset Lodge of the Masons. Mr. Bliven was also a Shriner, and a member of the Mohegan Trail Committee. He was a supporter of the Boy Scouts of America.
Bliven joined the Norwich Rotary Club no later than 1921, and was appointed by President Lucius Briggs to a committee on business ethics that year. His brother, E. Larue Bliven was also a Norwich Rotarian.
Bliven was the President and Treasurer of Norwich Paper Box Company (which later became Atlantic Packaging, operating until 2012.)
