The 1975 Norwich Native Son was educator Robert Mahoney. Born in Norwich in 1895, Dr. Mahoney spent his career with the Hartford school system, eventually becoming associate superintendent.
He enlisted in the US Army in 1918 and was discharged in 1919.
He was in the class of 1920 at Holy Cross, before getting his Ph.D. from Catholic University in 1922.
His doctoral thesis was later published as a book, “The Federal Government and Education.”
While at Catholic University, Mahoney wrote the lyrics to the fight song, “Hail CUA!”
His second book was published in 1931, “Poetry and Prose for Precis Writing.”
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Get Together Club, the New England Association of Teachers of English, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the National Education Association.

Robert Hugh Mahoney married Mary Louise Hannan in July of 1933. He passed away in 1979.
