Fellowship:  Suzy Hurlbert

No Rotarian Birthday’s his week.  There is one Rotarian Anniversary, Rodney Green 17 years!  Susy Hurlbert brought a guest, Josh Hibbard, our guest speaker.  Suzy’s fellowship consisted of a list of things that happened on this day in history.  Harry Truman ended discrimination in the military.  The American with Disabilities Act became law.  The FBI was founded in 1908.  In 1975 the number one song in America was “The Hustle.”  Mick Jagger turned 80 today!  And on this day Winston Churchill resigned his office as Prime Minister of Great Britain.  Other interesting facts on Churchill included Winston Churchill was an accomplished artist. The ‘Greatest’ Briton, the ‘British Bulldog’, was in fact half American. Winston Churchill received a Nobel Prize… for Literature.  He served in the British Parliament under six monarchs.  Winston Churchill served as prime minister twice.

Announcements:

Golf Committee member Andrew Nollman said golfers, volunteers, sponsors and auction items are still needed.  If you want to volunteer contact Erin Gizio and look for details at the end of this newsletter for information.  There will be no regular meeting that day.  If you have a speaker for a weekly meeting that you wish to schedule contact Alexis Kahn or Kevin Wickless and a meeting can be scheduled.  Mike Matera reported that there will be an Amber Alert sign-up at UCFS at the Edward & Mary Lord location on August 10th from 1 to 3pm.  Need 2 volunteers to assist in signing up children.

Membership Minute:  Stan Lucas

Stan passed out cards to any Rotarian who did not fill out a couple of weeks ago, recommending a person who would be a good prospective Rotarian.  He said he thinks it would be a good idea to have a special gathering inviting prospective members to learn about Rotary and the avenues of service involved.  Also, use your “Rotarian Magazine” to educate prospective members.  When you are finished reading your monthly magazine either give it to someone or bring it to a weekly meeting for a tool to give to guests.

Happy DollarsAndy Grant

*Andy started things off saying his pickleball games are going well so far this summer!

*Mary Richardson said the office drama continues as an ambulance arrived at the house next door that her company rents out.  Thankfully the tenant appears to be ok.  The big black snake is now gone from the office closet and has been replaced by a huge black beetle!

*Jeff Brining welcomed our guest Josh and was thrilled to report that his sailboat has finally been launched and he plans on an inaugural sail this weekend to Martha’s Vineyard!

*Susy Hurlbert welcomed our guest speaker Josh Hibbard.  She had a great 4 day getaway to Cape Cod and had a wonderful time.  While there she saw the Barbie movie and said it was really good!

*Mike Matera went to a Mets-Red Sox game earlier in the week and had a great time as they are 2 of his favorite teams.  He wore a Mets jersey and a Red Sox cap to the game.  He said the fans around him were very gracious and the Red Sox won the game.

*Kathryn Tracey volunteered over the weekend at a fundraising event at the Tamarack Lodge that involved a “Fun Run.”  This weekend she’s looking forward to relaxing at the beach!

*Lottie Scott was happy to see everyone and reminded people to be thankful for everyday they are alive.

*Andrew Nollman was happy to report that he has been to many live concerts this summer and hopes to get more in.  He is also happy that with he and his wife’s busy schedule they are able to fit in some visits with family and friends this summer.

*Stan Lucas conveyed a story of being at an ox cart parade in Costa Rica with his grandson and his grandson was able to take a ride throughout the parade on a really colorful decked out ox cart.  He also learned that the brass hubs on all the ox cart wheels are made in Bridgeport, CT of all places!

*Bob Reed said that he spoke with Marilyn Lowney and they are doing a container loading at the Haitian Health Foundation building at 100 Sherman Street in Norwich on August 5th at 8am.  Any Rotarian who can volunteer an hour or two to help load would be much appreciated.  Bob is also happy to have tickets to an English Premier League soccer game in Newark, NJ this Friday night.  It’s a short Summer Series of a few matches played in America.  Newcastle United will be playing Brighton.  Bob has visited friends in Newcastle, England a number of times, but has never seen the team play over there.  Finally he’ll get to see them!

Weekly Auction:  No auction this week.

Lottery:  Kathryn Tracey

Jim Daly, Mike Matera and Jim Daly once again drew cards and still no winner.

Program:

Our speaker this week was Josh Hibbard, Dean of Climate and Culture at Teacher’s Memorial Global Studies Magnet Middle School.  Josh became a Dean there in 2021. Teachers’ Memorial Global Studies Magnet Middle School offers students an interdisciplinary, project-based education embedded within a rigorous, standards-based core curriculum. The educational experience centers on global competency in the 21st Century through our theme, Global Studies. The students explore global issues through a local lens and develop Knowledge to Action Plan projects that focus on the personal impact of a problem in the local or larger global community. Students learn more about their heritage and reach a greater understanding one’s relationship to others. A service learning component built into the program teaches students about their connection and responsibility to the community, both local and global. World Language is offered in grades six, seven and eight. The school features labs for distance learning and language, a video production studio, greenhouse, and planetarium, as well as, virtual-reality learning through Google.  The schools motto is “We care. We act. We make an impact.”

President Mary called upon Bonnie Johnson to lead the club with the 4-Way Test and the meeting was adjourned at 1:05pm
